Bakery Bom Jesus Lagoa Seca, Paraiba / Brasil
The company was founded in 1981, in the City of Lagoa Seca, State of Paraiba, Brazil. Today, the company employs 16 people and one intern. Its main products are bread, biscuits, cakes, other wheat based products and soup. Several inputs are used in their production and the packing material of these inputs generates waste such as cans, plastic, cardboard, glass and organic waste on a daily basis. After applying the PREMA Good Housekeeping Guide, the manager started sorting the waste in the company, reducing the environmental impact and generating economic benefits from its waste.
Every day, the company cooks soups to be sold in the evening, and during the preparation a considerable amount of organic waste is generated. As in other small companies, employees were not worried about the final destination of the company’s waste generated during the production process. The waste was collected on a daily basis and taken to the city landfill without undergoing any treatment.
Actions taken within the enterprise (after application of the PREMA GHK guide)
Separation of waste (paper, glass, plastic, cardboard, organic waste);
Identification of a place to store the waste;
Use of informative tags and educative posters in the company;
Sale of the sorted waste.
There was no investment because the company already had different bins for waste collection and a place for storage.
Annual cost avoidance
Through the sales of cardboard and plastic the company made extra income of R$ 45,00/month or R$ 540,00/year. ($ 270)
The organic waste is now sold as animal feed to farms which provide the bakery with milk, in other words, the organic waste is exchanged in a business in which the cost of the liter of milk is reduced. This exchange generates a profit of:
Milk cost before the exchange:
R$ 1.40/L of milk ($ 0.70)
210L of milk/month x R$ 1.40 = R$ 294.00/month = R$ 3.528.00/year ($ 1264)
Annual cost avoidance
R$ 0.90/L of Milk
210L of milk/month x R$ 0.90 = R$ 189,00/month = R$2.268.00/year
R$ 3.528.00 – R$ 2.268 = R$ 1.260.00/year ($ 630)
The sorted collection of waste reduced the environmental impacts through the recycling of paper, glass, plastic cardboard and organic waste. Before, these materials were dumped to the landfill without any treatment.
The educative tags and posters placed in the company contributed to raising employees’ awareness of the importance of sorted collection and good housekeeping practices. The action of sorting the waste and the identification of the right place for each type of waste improved cleanliness and working conditions in the company.
