Minimizing Waste: Implementation of an Integrated Management Plan for Solid Waste

Districóndor S.A is a company that is dedicated to the commercialization and transformation of products and the provision of services for the furniture and ironmonger industry.

A number of measures have been implemented to minimize the quantity of waste and to better manage and use waste materials, as well as improve production:

  • Improve the separation of solid waste
  • Implement a good housekeeping program
  • Provide capacity building for personnel of the organization (internal and suppliers) on the appropriate handling of solid waste

The challenge

Inadequate disposal of solid waste generated in the process of cutting, drilling, assembly and installation of furniture and doors took place.

The most important challenges are: (1) the manual for the handling of solid waste is not being followed; (2) there is no follow-up related to the control of waste; (3) waste is not properly registered; and (4) there is not enough space for storage.

Additionally, the workers are not aware of these issues, and there is a lack of organization and cleanliness.

Actions taken within the enterprise (after the application of the PREMA GHK guide)

The leftover materials from the production process are now delivered to other companies as input material. This contributes especially for donations to NGOs, as well as to commercial trade of bigger leftover parts that have been previously disposed in landfills.

Design of containers for the collection of trimmer, modification of the working tables to avoid risks of accidents.

Implementation of the Good housekeeping program.

Continuous training of personnel for adequate separation of waste from the start.

Environmental and social benefits

Previously, the wooden leftovers were disposed off, whereas today they are stored in the warehouses for commercialization. This leads to a reduced amount of waste and reduced environmental impacts.

Some of the material is provided to NGOs, which are using them to produce different types of products.

Women receive training to make products for the NGO.

Through selling the recycled material, extra income is generated, which is used for events and incentives for the workers.

Organizational improvements

Improvement in the conditions related to Good Housekeeping.

Improvement in productivity and quality of the organization through documentation and implementation of processes on how to handle waste management.

Improvements related to occupational health and safety

The work environment is improved due to lower accident risk. The individual work space is perceived as cleaner and nicer.
